POULTRY WATER SYSTEM FAQ
FIND ANSWERS TO OUR MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you have to hook this up to a rain barrel?
No, you can hook this system up to any large container that can hold water and where you can drill an opening for the hose
Do you need electricity to use this system?
No. This system is gravity fed, so as long as the water source is higher than the bar, your flock will have access to fresh, drinking water.
How do I get my chickens to use this water bar?
Chickens are naturally curious creatures. We're told they are attracted to red, which is why the nipples are red. You can show them the water coming from the nipples by holding the nipples down and letting the water stream out. Once one chicken gets the idea, the rest will follow. Remove other water sources when you feel confident they know there is water from the water bar.
How many chickens can use this poultry water system?
Since chickens don't all drink at the same time, we advise about 6 chickens per nipple, so this system can easily accommodate 24 chickens.
CAN THIS BE HOOKED UP TO A SPIGOT OR HOSE?
Yes. However, you need to put on a pressure regulator that can bring the PSI down to 3-10 PSI. You can find food safe pressure regulators like that at stores that sell RV equipment.
Will this system keep the water from freezing in the winter?
No. If the temperatures fall below freezing the water bar will crack. This system can be updated to a circulating system if you have electricity near your coop. You can add a circulating pump, another hose and brass fitting. To make it winter ready and not freeze you will need a submersible water tank heater and the other is a thermostatic switch, which will power on the pump when it gets cold and will shut it off when the temps rise. If this is hooked up properly, your system will not freeze. (the heater has its own internal thermostat, so only the pump needs to be plugged into the thermostatic switch)
What does NSF certified mean?
The PVC we use for the water bar is food-safe NSF certified. For consumers, NSF certification means a product or service is safe and sanitary. They can rest assured that the company has met strict standards and that consumers are safe when they use any NSF-certified product.
How high should I mount the water bar?
We recommend between head and chest level of your chickens. Chickens will put their heads back when they drink from the nipples. If you have bantams mixed in your standard-sized flock, you can put a rock, cinderblock, or step for them to use the water bar.
PRO TIP: The pump side of the water bar should be slightly lower to prevent air pockets.
What should I do if one of the nipples starts leaking?
First press the nipple a few times to see if it is still leaking. If it is, then shut off the water to the water bar, unscrew the nipple and wash it out. Sometimes debris gets in there that will keep the trigger slightly open. That usually does the trick. Then screw it back it. (Don't overtighten). See video below for more info.
Does this poultry water system require any maintenance?
We are huge fans of a set-it-and-forget-it system, which this pretty much is. We do recommend emptying the rain barrel or container in the spring and fall and cleaning it out. Then add fresh water to the system.
Can ducks use this poultry water system?
Yes. This system is great for chickens, ducks, baby chicks (after two weeks old), quail, and turkeys.
Ducks do need to be able to dunk their heads, so they must have another water source, but they will drink from the water bar.
